I'm often asked how I got started raising dachshunds. For anyone who truly knows me the question is more like, why'd it take so long? To my family the fact that I have lots of animals is no shocker. Of course many think I'm insane, but most already knew it.
My parents I'm sure thought I would be a vet or something similar. My life took a different path for a while but we got here eventually.
Getting back to the how's and why's...
I need to take you back about 20 yrs ago. There was a fishing show on TV that my Dad watched. He had a black and tan smooth dachshund that went fishing with him all the time. Daddy thought this was cool and wouldn't it be neat to have a buddy like that. The dog's name was Norman. Mom surprised Dad with a dachshund puppy, black and tan smooth, registered name, Paddick's Norman's Revenge. Norman was a great dog. He had a good life with my folks and was much loved. He was diagnosed with diabetes and was still a happy and mostly healthy dog. Then tragedy struck. Daddy was in the hospital and Mom was spending many hours there. She left Norman in the yard and he got out and was hit by a car. A sad day for our family.
Time goes one, Daddy decides it's time to get another dachshund. This time they get a beautiful shaded red longhair female, her name, Meggie. And the rest as they say is history. I was hooked. I fell head over heels for this dog. I've tried many times to bring her home with me but they always catch me at the door. I've been looking for a dog that looks like her since. One day I'll find one and when I do she's mine!
We are a family of dog lovers. Well animal lovers really. My husband is an amazing man. There's no way Double D Kennels would have ever come into existence without him.
I breed only longhair dachshunds. I do this because this is my heart and passion. It's the ears! There's just something about them. I grew up with Irish & Gordon Setters so to me dachshunds have the same look but smaller. I fall in love with almost all breeds that have a gorgeous coat and long muzzle.
I breed first and foremost to try and improve my bloodlines. So I guess you can say I breed for myself first and foremost.
While I don't get to show as often as I'd like I do continue to show my beloved Spinner and soon his offspring will be joining him in the ring. Spinner is now pointed toward his championship.
